With conventional control system most of the robot controllers only control the robot. If a number of extra components has to be controlled, like driven conveyor systems, pushers, elevators, etc. the choice will be an additional PLC control followed by a safety controller and the remote monitoring system, all compatible between them.
Controllers technology has developped so much that allows any module to be integrated and has allready grown to a maturity which can manage kinematics, the cell field controll, as well as the networking.
